Scalr announces native support for VMware vCenter
The Scalr Enterprise Grade Cloud Management Platform was considered a “born in the cloud” solution since its foundation. “Born in the cloud” has always been a big part of Scalr’s identity and mission - to enable enterprises to safely and responsibly offer all employees self-service cloud computing.
Over the years, thanks to working with some of the world’s largest companies, our understanding of an enterprise IT cloud strategy has evolved. If you would have talked to us three years ago, you’d hear all cloud-native, all the time.
As they move to the cloud, today’s enterprises are undertaking massive migration projects and building standardized provisioning workflows. We shouldn’t forget, however, that Datacenters are still a huge part of a typical enterprise IT infrastructure.
Today’s VMware Administrators face pressure to adopt public cloud to offer a self-service, API-centric experience to internal customers, but often lack the operational experience and tooling to perform their mission across both VMware and other cloud platforms, like AWS. As a result, their options are very limited because:
- VMware’s excellent suite of products and operational tools are simply not designed to support public cloud deployments effectively
- VMware vCloud has been deprecated
- VMware vRealize does not support public clouds as well as it does VMware products
- Leveraging VMware’s VIO implementation of OpenStack is a possible approach but then requires deep knowledge of OpenStack and still requires additional tools and expertise to add public cloud platforms incrementally
Scalr now offers native support for VMware vCenter, with no intermediate appliances or API translators. Scalr connects directly to vCenter to discover, manage and provision resources, as well as to enforce policies around placement, access, and finance.
Introducing Scalr’s Native Support for VMware vCenter
With Scalr, administrators are now able to offer a consistent self-service experience for VMware workloads, alongside the major public and private clouds.
Administrators can leverage Scalr’s policy engine to create guardrails for VMware usage, making sure both regular and power users always provision to the appropriate datastores and locations.
Gain visibility, control and context over existing VMware servers
While you might be focusing on building an elegant self-service provisioning process for VMware servers, you still have to manage and maintain the existing ones.
The Scalr Discovery Manager provides a simple onboarding process for existing workloads. Once your servers have been discovered and onboarded, you get a single pane of glass for your datacenter and cloud servers.
Discovered servers are mapped to applications (Scalr Farms). Rather than just have a list of servers (although you also get that), you can identify the role each server plays in it’s respective stack. The discovery process will often help you recognize servers that shouldn’t even be running.
Standardize VMware Self-Service with Cloud Self-Service
vCenter and AWS might work differently in many respects, but the challenges of offering direct self-service are the same:
- Letting users go directly to the console often results in over provisioning and the usage of wrong resources
- Policies tend to be reactive and non-assistive, users have a hard time “getting it right”
- A lengthy approval process hinders agility and breaks the self-service model
- Multiple users accessing multiple consoles = visibility nightmare
Scalr creates a self-service environment where assistive policies can be applied transparently to both regular users, and more advanced power users. The Scalr Policy engine covers five general policy areas, all of which can now be leveraged with VMware:
- Financial Policy - Cost reduction through automation, budget management and cost metering
- Access Policy - Authentication, RBAC, permission policies
- Workload Placement Policy - Restrictions on usage, server size, datastores, locations and more
- Lifecycle Policy - Application lifecycle, reclamation, event-based automation, CI/CD pipelines
- Integration Policy - Tie into existing tools such as Chef, Puppet, ServiceNow, notification and monitoring platforms, and others

Through Scalr’s Policy Engine, VMware admins can build guardrails to ensure users always make the right choices, and avoid the dangerous ones. Once the policies are in place, users can leverage the Scalr Power Console to build their applications just as they would on the cloud platforms.

Today’s enterprises are using Scalr to build standardized self-service workflows for public and private cloud platforms. VMware administrators are now able to offer the same experience for their datacenters. Repetitive requests can go through a simplified Storefront, while more advanced users go through the Power Console or the Scalr API directly. In either case, Scalr’s hierarchical policy enforcement model enables the frictionless consumption of VMware resources - while allowing administrators to have better control and visibility over workloads.
